A joint program with the Faculty of Chemistry

This interdisciplinary program is designed for students who want to explore the intersection of biology and chemistry—where many of today’s most exciting scientific discoveries are made. It is especially well suited for students with a strong background in both subjects from high school.

Over three years, you will take advanced courses in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and related fields. The program leads to a degree awarded jointly by the Faculties of Biology and Chemistry, opening the door to postgraduate studies in either discipline.

Career Opportunities

Biotechnology and biomedical industries have grown rapidly in recent years, largely driven by the integration of chemistry and biology. Many of today’s innovations depend on understanding biological processes at the molecular level, creating strong demand for graduates with expertise in both fields.

Graduates can pursue careers in biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, the chemical and bio-based industries, research and academic institutions, and medical and healthcare organizations. Opportunities also exist in drug development, genetic engineering, and advanced agricultural technologies. Career paths include research, industry roles, and teaching, with the option to teach in secondary schools for those who obtain a teaching certificate.

Program Structure & Specialization

The program is jointly delivered by the Faculties of Biology and Chemistry, giving students access to courses and expertise from both disciplines.

Year 1:         Build a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science

Years 2/3:    Advance into specialized courses across both fields

Final Year:   Choose areas of specialization and gain hands-on experience through research in faculty laboratories

This structure ensures both theoretical depth and practical research experience.

Research Areas

Students and researchers in the program can explore a broad range of topics spanning both chemistry and biology. Research areas on the chemistry side include bioorganic and bioinorganic mechanisms, heterocyclic compounds, chemical synthesis and enzymatic processes, catalytic antibodies and anti-cancer agents, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and macromolecular crystallography.

On the biology side, research focuses on fields such as cell and molecular biology, biochemistry and bioenergetics, genetics of microorganisms, plants, and model organisms, as well as genetic engineering and biophysics. Additional areas include membrane biology, aging, carcinogenesis, developmental biology, and ecology.

This program provides a strong scientific foundation, interdisciplinary perspective, and hands-on research experience—preparing graduates for advanced studies and careers at the forefront of science and innovation.
