Summer Program for International Students

RESEARCH PROJECTS IN BIOLOGY – CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER 2023

The Faculty of Biology at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa is announcing a research project course as part of its Summer Program for International Students to celebrate its jubilee. The program is intended for outstanding students who are enrolled in one of the following undergraduate programs: Life Sciences, Biology, Chemical Biology, Biochemistry, Biochemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Bioinformatics.

*Candidates should be toward the end of their degree program (end of their second or third year).
*Selected students will conduct a research project spanning three weeks in selected laboratories beginning on July 2nd , 2023.
*Students will engage in state-of-the-art research under the personal guidance of faculty members at the Technion while enjoying the vibrant research, learning, and social environment of the Faculty and the Technion.
*Candidates who are accepted to participate in the program will receive on-campus housing and will have their registration and administrative fees fully covered by the faculty. Attendees will also benefit from participating in an exciting social program during their time at the Technion.

 

Research Project in Biology

The course provides hands-on experience in planning and performing experimentations at the selected laboratories, marking a transition from undergraduate to graduate-level research work.
*Students will join an active research lab and, under the guidance of a senior graduate student and the lab’s PI, will learn to design experiments, troubleshoot, and summarize data. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in and present at the lab meetings.

*The program is intended to start on July 2, 2023, and will last for 3 weeks.
*Completion of the program will include a seminar presentation about the project (which will occur at the end of the three weeks) and submission of a written, structured project report that will be due no later than August 31, 2023. Grading will be based on the evaluation of the hosting lab’s principal investigator.

Below you will find a list of all research fields in the Faculty of Biology. Clicking on the field links will lead you to a list of all the faculty members relevant to that field as well as participants of the program. You are welcome to browse through the various fields to help you find a research project that matches your interests. Once you have narrowed down the project(s), you should contact the relevant faculty members accordingly.

All applicants should submit the following documents:
1. A CV
2. A most recent transcript (2021-2022)
3. A motivation letter (one-page letter) describing how the program will contribute to your scientific career, why you wish to undertake this course, any relevant experience, skills, and attributes, and your long-term goals.
4. The names of two recommenders

The application deadline is November 30, 2022 (Acceptance to the program will be announced on December 31, 2022)
The top 12 applicants will be selected to participate in the program; the evaluation process is based on students’ academic achievements.
After acceptance to the program, students will begin discussing their research project with their mentor.
Students will start preparing for the practical part of the project prior to beginning the program by engaging in background reading under the guidance of the lab’s PI; this is to occur during the second half of the academic year and no later than April 1, 2023.
