Prof. Michael H. Glickman

The Faculty of Biology at the Technion is a vibrant Life Science community of students, researchers, staff, faculty, and alumni. We boast active research labs, shared research facilities, and comprehensive academic training programs. Situated in a world-leading technological institute, our studies and research are fully immersed in an interdisciplinary environment.

For our students, the Faculty of Biology offers an unparalleled educational experience, combining rigorous academic programs with hands-on research opportunities. Our high teacher-to-student ratio ensures individual attention, nurturing of inquisitive minds and empowering students to become critical thinkers, problem solvers, and compassionate leaders in the global scientific community. Our undergraduate and graduate degrees were conceived to provide in-depth research training while covering the breadth of essential areas of the life sciences including evolution, genetics, biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, health, and disease mechanisms. We take advantage of the Technion environment, incorporating aspects of mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, and engineering into our programs. Courses are taught by active researchers who are leaders in their field. This approach results in a graduate that is well-prepared for the scientific challenges of the 21st century.

By fostering strong partnerships with other faculties and institutions, our research teams aim to tackle complex issues that transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries. We ask fascinating questions such as “How do bacteria develop antibiotic resistance?”, “How do plant roots know which direction to grow?”, “What causes sporadic Alzheimer’s disease?”, “How do animal cells coordinate to create a tissue?”, “Why is it so challenging to develop anticancer drugs?”, “For what purpose do some bacteria or viruses harness the energy from light?”, “How do animals navigate?”, or “How do viruses and their hosts coexist?”. These questions are answered in an array of model systems – animals, plants, microbes, engineered tissues, or single molecules – using a wide range of experimental tools from informatics to optics. Our faculty and students are outstanding researchers, and members of international associations, who routinely win prestigious prizes. Recognizing that our collective strength stems from embracing diverse perspectives and experiences, our department serves as a welcoming home for students and scholars from all over the globe, creating an atmosphere of curiosity, collaboration, and mutual support.

With the effectiveness of our approach, it is not surprising that our alumni are accomplished professors in universities, chief managers in Biotech, researchers, administrators, and educators in Israel and abroad.

The next few years will see us further expand to new research directions at the forefront of basic and applied Life Sciences, and strengthen global partnerships with academia and industry. Whether you are an aspiring student or a seasoned scientist, we invite you to join us on this exciting mission. Together we will push the boundaries of knowledge and make meaningful contributions to society.
