We are proud to share that Prof. Debbie Lindell has been elected as a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), one of the highest honors in the life sciences.
EMBO membership recognizes researchers who have made exceptional contributions to advancing our understanding of biology through outstanding scientific achievements.
Prof. Lindell is an internationally recognized pioneer in marine microbiology. Her groundbreaking research has transformed our understanding of the complex interactions between marine cyanobacteria – Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus, the microscopic organisms responsible for a significant fraction of global photosynthesis – and the viruses that infect them.
Through her pioneering work, Prof. Lindell and her team have revealed how these host – virus interactions shape the ecology and evolution of the oceans. Their discoveries have uncovered mechanisms of bacterial resistance, demonstrated how cyanophages reprogram their hosts using genes acquired from them, and mapped the global distribution and infection dynamics of these viruses. Together, these contributions have fundamentally advanced our understanding of marine ecosystems and the biological processes that influence Earth’s biogeochemical cycles.
Election to EMBO is a testament to Prof. Lindell’s scientific vision, creativity, and lasting impact on the field. It also reflects the excellence of the research carried out at the Faculty of Biology and the international leadership of our scientific community.
