Title: Molecular basis of the beginning of life
Host: Benjamin Podbilewicz

Abstract: From the Egg to the Kidney… and Back

What connects the union of gametes at fertilization, a fundamental process that ensures the transmission of genetic material through the generations, to the defense against pathogens causing urinary tract infection (UTI) — the most common type of non-epidemic bacterial infection in humans? In my talk, I will describe how our work on reproductive proteins led us to visualize uromodulin, the most abundant protein in human urine, as well as glycoprotein 2, a related defense molecule acting at the level of our gastrointestinal tract. By integrating cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography and AlphaFold modeling, these studies not only shed light on the molecular basis of UTI prevention, but also revealed an additional layer of complexity in vertebrate egg-sperm recognition.
