Dear Biology Students, Postdocs, and Faculty,
Next week for our Faculty Seminar Series at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 1st, we will have a talk by Dr. Ifat Sher-Rosenthal of the Goldschleger Eye Institute, Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, and Ophthalmology Department, Gray Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences Tel-Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel. Dr. Sher-Rosenthal will present a talk titled “From Bedside to Bench and Back – Personalized Drug Discovery for Retinal Degeneration”.
Talk Abstract: From Bedside to Bench and Back – Personalized Drug Discovery for Retinal Degeneration
This seminar will present our laboratory’s integrative research on advanced
diagnostics and therapeutic strategies for retinal degenerative diseases. Our work
spans three core domains: (1) Patient-specific in vitro models: We employ stem
cell technologies and tissue engineering to construct in vitro systems that replicate
disease pathology for mechanistic studies and drug screening. (2) Transgenic in
vivo models: Rodent models are used to elucidate disease mechanisms and
assess the safety and efficacy of candidate therapies, facilitating clinical translation.
(3) Non-invasive clinical diagnostic platforms: We develop sensitive
technologies for early detection of neurodegenerative conditions. By leveraging the
eye as a window for brain health, we advance objective diagnostics for disorders
such as Alzheimer’s disease, as well as AI-driven ocular imaging that can predict
blood counts.
The presentation will outline our translational pipeline: from model development and
drug delivery optimization to preclinical validation and clinical application. I will share
examples demonstrating how these steps drive neuroprotective therapy
development.
