We propose a new theory of wheat domestication where climatic stress triggered transposable element (TE) bursts, generating vast phenotypic diversity. Unlike wild relatives where natural selection favored lower TE content, we suggest human selection preserved alleles with increased TE content near domestication-related traits, effectively fixing these TE-rich variations.1
